A Thought for the Fourth of July

July Fourth marks a day to celebrate freedom for all Americans.  It was not long ago however, when former slave and human rights' activist Frederick Douglass responded to his Independence Day invitation with disdain saying, "Do you mean, citizens, to mock me, by asking me to speak to-day?"

In this historic speech, "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" given on July 5th, Douglass stated that giving the speech on the Fourth did not make sense because Black Americans like himself were not free.  The was only 159 years ago.

Over 100 years ago and many animals, human and non, are still not free from their oppressors.  This Fourth of July no doubt, millions of Americas will partake in eating hot dogs, hamburgers, and other objects of animal exploitation.  These animals had no say in their lives or in the ending of them.  There is no logical reason why we should either.  Others' lives are not for the stronger to control or to take.

Eating animals on the Fourth of July makes as much sense as if Frederick Douglass had given a celebratory speech on the Fourth of July.  If you truly want to celebrate freedom, celebrate your freedom to choose cruelty-free meals and lead a vegan lifestyle.  This way, we can all make equality mean more than fireworks.
